With a gallon of milk costing almost the same as a gallon of gas, going to the grocery store is becoming just as painful as going to the gas station.

"A few items used to cost you under 20 dollars," says shopper Billi Matthias. "Now a few items are over 40 dollars. You go up there and think you didn't get much, they ring it up, you think holy man!"

Even if you want to cook a small meal for your family, it's going to run quite the tab. If you start with about three pounds of ground chuck, that's at least $7. If you want to make a salad, red peppers are $3.99 a pound at , green peppers are $2.19 a pound, tomatoes $2.49 a pound-- a head of lettuce is $1.19. And if you want to add a starch, instant rice is $2.59.

Add it all up, and that basic meal will cost you almost $18.

Food economist Jim Hilker guesses the same meal could have been $15 a couple of years ago.

"We've seen eggs prices go up, milk prices went up. Beef prices went up, but not that much," he says.

He says the reasons for the recent rise in food prices are complex, including a high demand for food, rising energy prices and problems with food production, including bad wheat crops-- all things he doesn't see changing anytime soon.

That's bad news for Billi Mathias, who's had to give up certain "luxuries."

"My asparagus, my fresh vegetables that I just love," she says. "The price has gone up, and it just gets harder to do."

She's wondering what next will be crossed off her shopping list for good.

what are people going to do?the gov has us right in a mess and we can't do anything about it.worse yet the aren't really helping either.not in the ways they could.no new president can change the problems like some hope they will.wars will continue till countries are broke.and how many more could happen?world power is being wanted by so many coutries.the oil thing is a big part of there efforts.it could come down to starveing countries.slowly people are learning to go without.slowly they are learning to live on less money.giving up so much.evil happenings are going on all over the world.evil has a big hold on the world. when will the battle between good and evil take place,so all the evil is wipped out?no one knows.it is not made clear about anything, just that many things will happen.just like we know the weathers are to get worse, just don't know when.but we see so many changes, not for the good.we will be giving up alot, mans greed is causing that.greed destroys.people suffer.

if it was only milk we had to worry about.no,it is all food prices.discount food store have also raised food prices.they are cheaper than walmart but are getting terrible as well.many on fixed incomes or food cards, low wages and part time workers or even temp jobs workers are suffering and not eating right at all.thoes who had a income that they were getting by,are no longer doing so.credit cards are being maxed out then not paid.many are being laid off or compainies are closing.many who went on strikes are hurting and still might loose jobs.jobs are not comming into mich.our own gov is doing things to hurt mich, and taxes are being lost, schools are hurting, taxes are all messed up.people are leaving.budgets for each county are getting less.and freedoms are being taken away.the gas prices are causing us to feel like we are in a prison.we can't afford to do anything, stress and depression is a plague.then hunger, loss of things we worked hard to get.we must sell,or go without?eat or gas?why?

if the usa gov would of thought ahead yrs ago,and seen what the results of there choices would be.the later on effects.would this be happening.giving jobs and grains, and so many things to other countries, helping them out,has helped put us in the hole.causing alot of hardships for american people.not the rich ones yet,but there time is comming.they'll be picking up all the taxes and many bills for this country, when more loose jobs and times get harder.we collect trillions in taxes, alot of taxes draw interest till money is needed.gov owned lands drill oil,it goes to the gov.plus draws interest.the gov has many investments we know nothing about, making more money.but yet they can NOT raise proverty levels and food card amounts?to help out more people.or social secerity programs,or fixed incomes of many?lack of food causes illness, many things spread, making more sick.it is like we are in a depression, just not been told about.all are getting hit by gas prices, and will get worse.eat or what?

to keep my low paying, part time job,I'm going to have to figure how to walk 12 miles one way.as gas has gone way to high to keep enough in my car for a week.giving up this job would not help but then again when I THINK IT IS COSTING ME IN GAS?IS IT WORTH IT.PLUS MY CAR NEEDS NEW TIRES ECT HAPPENS.when we as a nation continue to buy oi from over seas, and considering there type of gov,and how the gov profits from the oil,not the people.then we must think,we are supporting terriost countries and communist gov, while ours gas prices, food prices and our lives are getting worse,DOES THIS MAKE ENSE?if the USA would stop sending grains and putting our oil on the market, how would other countries deal with that.our wars are based on keeping the purrsian gulf open so terriost can not stop oil flow.do to the oil thing many countries are suffering.a no bomb war is going on.causing so many problems for the people.the rich ones in gov will surrive what about the little people?the ones not eating right

some are paying 3.39 for milk, not much cheaper than 3.85 a gal of gas.all food products have went up.and thoes on fixed incomes and food cards find eating right impossible.2 weeks a month if lucky.many can't even get buy if working.and prices continue to go up.they said 4$ by spring, also 8-10 a gal sooner than not?this is effecting police dept.less driving.so less patrols going on.not enough jobs to raise taxes to run states.many companies can not give raises, due to there riseing costs.how many problems will come up as prices of gas go up?some part time workers have quit there jobs as they can't get to work, and work only for gas.counties are cutting many things out.no one can afford to go to ect.then northern states get hit with heating costs plus gas to drive?then the food costs.and not enough decent paying jobs comming or here.when it gets down to eating pots of beans and bread,we can say we are a poor country?up goes gas, down go people.forced to pay,or not have?can't pay, then what?

This is the norm, not the exception. Families, not just poor families are getting hit hard. Ther's no more Saturday shopping trips, dinners out, ballgames, movies, etc. This is only going to get worse. At what point do we find existence too costly? What then?
