His name is Vincent Soto, a 21-year-old Lansing man who faces charges that come with penalties that range from 15 years behind bars to life in prison.
"We authorized a warrant with two counts, one count of open murder, and one count of child abuse in the first degree," said Stuart J. Dunnings III, the Ingham County Prosecuting Attorney.
The former Eastern High School student was arraigned in 54-A District Court today by Judge Louise Alderson after police say he called 911 when he was baby-sitting 13-month-old month old Laycee Johnson on Tuesday and told police she had fallen and was not breathing.
"Unfortunately, we see this all to common," Dunnings said.
The tragic incident happened at a home on Quaker Ct. in Lansing, but neighbors who live nearby say they never saw any suspicious activity.
" I would see the kids outside playing, you know like regular kids just outside having fun and things like that, nothing bad to make you like what's going on over there," said Sabrina, a neighbor.
Family members of the suspect say Soto and the baby's mother had been dating for nearly 10 months and the two were living together, and he occasionally baby-sat her three children while she was at work.
In a statement to News 10 Soto's mothers says "he was a good kid and I wish that if he was in trouble, I wish he would have called me because I would have been there for him."
Soto's father tells News 10 "We know our son, and something like this is hard to believe, it's not fair, it's not right."
Soto's family said Soto also has a child of his own, by a different woman. He is now in the Ingham County Jail without bond.
