Michigan to Count Katrina Students

The state Senate unanimously approved legislation Thursday that would let students displaced by Hurricane Katrina be counted as Michigan residents in this month's tally at public schools across the state.

The number of students determines how much state funding each school receives.

The legislation heads back to the House for its final approval.

Governor Granholm has said she expects the Federal Emergency Management Agency to reimburse the state for costs related to the evacuees such as education, health care and housing.
