Red Cross Relief

Mid-Michigan's local Red Cross chapter has taken in $750,000 in donations related to Hurricane Katrina,

That money goes into a National Disaster Relief Fund. No more than 9% can be deducted for administrative needs, such as overtime or printing.

For local efforts, the Red Cross chapters can take money from that fund. Some of that money goes to sending volunteers south to help with the relief effort.

The Red Cross's training classes that prepare volunteers for that 3-week trip have been full since Katrina hit. 51 volunteers were deployed as of Saturday, and Saturday afternoon they got the call to send 35 more.
