Delayed and the number downsized, two planes carrying evacuees from New Orleans touched down just outside of Battle Creek at Augusta's Air National Guard Base Monday.
Close to 300 men, women and children will be temporarily housed at the Fort Custer Training Center. Food, shelter and medical attention will be provided until people can be placed around the state.
The base and Fort Custer had been on standby since Saturday. Monday, FEMA said to expect up to 1,000 evacuees by noon. Two planes arrived just before 5:30 p.m.
