Community Impact of Strike

Carole Stacy of the Michigan Health Council is not involved in the Ingham dispute, but she's seen the effects of strikes before. She says if the strike persists nurses may find new jobs elsewhere or some will cross the picket line which could lead to morale issues within the hospital.

Older nurses may decide to retire earlier than planned. This will add to the current nursing shortage. Some area-nursing programs could also be affected as clinicals will not be done at Ingham while the strike is on-going.

And in the community, the longer the strike lasts, the greater the chance people will switch their preference of hospitals.

But if the strike is short-lived, experts believe the effects will also be short-lived.
