Doctor John Flood of Ingham Regional Orthopedic Hospital is currently the only surgeon in Mid-Michigan certified to perform a new back surgery.
The surgery replaces a worn-down spinal disc with an artificial disc. Typically degenerative disc disease is treated with a spinal fusion procedure when non-surgical treatments fail. The procedure alleviates pain, but can lead to future breakdown of other spinal discs.
The new artificial disc will also relieve pain and it prevents future breakdown of spinal discs. During the surgery, the body's worn-down disc is replaced with the metal and plastic artificial disc.
The procedure is not for everyone. Dr. Flood says it’s best for patients 30 to 50 years old with one degenerative disc that has failed non-surgical treatments.
