It's a half-day program currently run at Harley Franks Elementary.
Next year, parents are invited to enroll at Sheridan Road Elementary, Grand River Elementary, and Wexford Elementary.
The district's very excited to expand the program. That extra year of school, they say, is statistically proven to improve MEAP scores later in a child's education. Pre-kindergarten get the students started with things like math and reading, but more than that, it's offers a chance to teach a child social skills, behavioral skills and perhaps to catch learning disabilities early so that these kids are ready to learn when they start kindergarten the following year.
Coordinator Sergio Keck: "I see nothing but growth from here. The need is there, the advantage is there, and hopefully the grant will be there for many years to come."
Parents who live in Lansing are eligible for the free service. Children must be turning four years old before December 1, 2005.
Enroll at Harley Franks Elementary, just off Wise Road on Mondays and Tuesdays. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, enrollments at the PACE center at 500 W. Lenawee, Room 123.
