Local Hospitals Join to Detect Prostate Cancer

Harold Guy of Lansing was 64 years old when his wife urged him to visit the free prostate cancer screenings provided by Ingham Regional Medical Center six years ago.

He had never been tested before and didn't regularly visit the doctor. "I just figured I was well and didn't need to go to the doctor," he said.

But he thanks his wife Mary today. He was diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer during that free screening. He has since had surgery and is now cancer free. Both Mary and Harold urge men to be screened.

Screenings will be held Wednesday and appointments are required. Criteria for a screening are as follows:

  • Men who have not been screened for the past two years
  • Men who do not visit a urologist

Testing is especially recommended for men who are high-risk. That includes men more than 50 years old, African-American men, and men with a family history of prostate cancer.
