Lansing Police say a van with at least two children and a car collided at the intersection around 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning. One of the children is a five-year-old boy who was in the van. Residents in the area say the boy was pinned underneath the van. Neighbors helped lift the van to get him out. Police say he was rushed to a local hospital and remains in serious condition.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but neighbors say that intersection of Moffitt and Hughes has always been dangerous. Bill White lives right by the corner and says people speed through the area despite a stop sign on Moffitt Street.
Residents had started a petition years ago to try to get a four-way stop sign at the intersection, but they say nothing ever came of it.
Council Member Randy Williams overseas that ward and says he has heard complaints before about the area. Once the investigation is complete and the city' s traffic engineer has all the facts, it will be determined if something needs to be done.
Williams says if a four-way stop in needed, he'll make sure it's done.
