The REAL ID Act could boost the cost of drivers' licenses around the country and lengthen lines at Secretary of State branch offices.

The federal legislation, passed in June, requires that states verify applicants are American citizens or legal residents. It's all in an effort to strengthen homeland security.

But the verification process could cost time and more money.

It's not known how much prices would increase in Michigan or if federal funding would be available. Michigan must be in compliance by 2008.
