When the power goes out on a campus the size of Michigan State University it means more than just resetting equipment. MSU is a state of the art research facility and it's just not clear yet how or if the two consecutive power outages affected projects.
Gary Blanchard, Professor and Associate Chair of the Chemistry Department's Graduate Program, says his laser lab seems to be okay but it could be a few days before other labs in the Chemistry building can be fully assessed.
Like others on campus, the Chemistry building has a generator, but it only works for hallway lights and elevators. For example, fume hoods, which protect from toxic chemicals, are not powered.
