Felons May Receive Early Release

A new proposal by the Michigan Department of Corrections would release felons before their minimum sentence is over. The proposal excludes those whose crimes resulted in a death.

Officials say this would be the best way to handle the problem of overcrowding in Michigan prisons. They say the prisons are growing at a rate of 240 inmates a month.

Six hundred and twenty-five felons would immediately be eligible for early release and the same amount the following year. It would save the state about $16 million.

Local prosecutors say the law is not in the best interest of citizens. They feel the law should stay the way it is. Truth in Sentencing says all felons must serve their minimum sentence at a secure facility.

The proposal goes before the House next week.
