The first major round of job cuts has been announced for the Electrolux refrigerator plant in Greenville that's closing next year. About 800 of the factory's 2700 employees will be laid off beginning September 2. Company spokesman Tony Evans says the newest workers will be the first to be let go.
Electrolux announced in January of 2004 that it was closing the sprawling site and building a new refrigerator plant in Mexico, where labor is much cheaper.
The company opened its massive, new factory in Juarez, Mexico, last week. It now has 800 workers and eventually will have 3000.
The last day of production in Greenville will be in the first quarter of next year.
