U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow has announced that she plans to marry early in 2003.
The Michigan Democrat got engaged to Tom Athans over the holidays. The couple has been dating since the fall.
Athans is a native of Michigan and he served in the Air Force for 13 years. He also is a former staffer for Democratic US Rep Dale Kildee and worked briefly for Stabenow's 2000 Senate campaign. He is now executive director of Democracy Radio, a Washington D.C. based group that develops talk radio programs.
A spokesperson for the senator says the wedding will be a small, family event within the next several months.
Stabenow, 52, has been married once before. She and Dennis Stabenow divorced in 1990 after nearly 20 years of marriage. They have two adult children.
