Lansing City Payouts Suspended

Mayor Tony Benavides is expected to suspend payouts for 12 top city officials sometime Monday.

The payouts include unused vacation and sick time as well as comp time. The total for the 12 payouts is estimated at more then $600,000. Money council member Carol Wood says was not budgeted for and is not available without dipping into another fund.

Council members have voiced concern over whether the comp time applies to the 12 people in question and there's even talk of hiring an outside attorney to look over contracts. Council President Sandy Allen says she's not sure that's a good idea because it would be costly.

Mayor Benavides, who is up for reelection, is expected to notify the 12 people part of his administration by letter Monday. Council will take up the matter of hiring an outside attorney at its next Committee of the Whole meeting.
