Michigan Senate Passes Child Protection Bills

The Michigan Senate has overwhelmingly approved a 14-bill package aimed at protecting children at school and daycare from dangerous criminals and sex offenders.

One bill would bar sex offenders from living, working or loitering within 1,000 feet of a school.

The ban wouldn't apply to younger individuals on the state's sex offender registry who engaged in consensual sex with minors.

The legislation also would make it a felony for school, daycare workers and other contract employees not to report felonies and certain misdemeanors in their backgrounds.
