The Michigan Department of Education Thursday morning gave out grades to every school district in the state. The report is called the "Adequate Yearly Progress" report, or AYP. It measures the year-to-year student achievement in each district and gives the districts an overall score.
Overall, just over half of Michigan school districts made enough progress according to the Department of Education. 52 percent of the districts in Michigan made the list of adequate progress. 262 school districts did not make the list. However, when considered as individual buildings, rather than districts, 82 percent of schools in the state made the list of adequate progress.
The rest of the school districts fell into two categories. There are 146 districts that fall in the needs improvement category called "Priority School" and 358 districts that are in the failed category called "Focus Schools." Focus school districts "have wide achievement gaps between the various student populations" the Department of Education said in a press release.
