Movement to Recognize Eating Disorders Goes National

Kathleen MacDonald and Betsy Strong will help write a bill to recognize eating disorders as a disease and therefore be covered by health insurance.

Eight million Americans suffer from eating disorders and many of them go without treatment because health insurance plans will not cover the costs. Another problem, experts say, is that many physicians are not trained in recognizing and treating eating disorders.

Strong and MacDonald hope legislation backed by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and the Eating Disorders Coalition will help others avoid struggling for years, as they had, with eating disorders.
