State police say a 12-year-old boy took his friend's mother's car for an alcohol-induced joyride before crashing it into some trees.
The boy is in a Kalamazoo hospital with some broken bones.
The case will be turned over to a juvenile court judge after the child is released from the hospital.
He drove for several miles early Tuesday in rural Niles Township in Berrien County.
The boy smashed into several trash cans and mailboxes along the way.
Michigan State Police are awaiting lab results to see if the boy was intoxicated. But Lieutenant Michael Brown says the driver had been drinking.
Troopers don't know where he got the alcohol from.
