Did you know that a toddler can drown in a bucket of water or even worse, the toilet? It takes less than two inches of water for child, who falls face-first, to drown.
Theresa Sheridan, Aquatic Director for Lansing's westside YMCA, offered these tips to parents to help their kids avoid water-related accidents.
1) Always watch children. A child can drown even while you're answering the phone.
2) Don't rely on flotation devices. They can be easily punctured.
3) Know CPR
4) Keep a locked-gate around backyard pools and empty kiddie pools when not in use.
5) Swim lessons can be started as early as 6 months. Even if the child doesn't learn to swim right away, lessons can teach a child to respect the water.
