Anti-Meth Legislation Moves Through Legislature

State lawmakers have approved a bill to reduce the number of illegal meth labs sprouting up across the state.

The House bill would require customers to show ID when buying some cold and flu medicine. The bill also would ban anyone under 18 from buying the products.

The key material to make meth can be extracted from some over-the-counter medications.

The bill is to be returned to the Senate, which passed a similar measure last month. Retailers oppose the idea.

Police found six meth labs in Michigan in 1996. The number rose to 209 in 2004.
