Price Tags on Items May Not Always Be Necessary

Stores in Michigan would not have to put price tags on most products if they install easily accessible scanners.

That's according to the provisions in a bill approved Tuesday by a state House committee. The House Commerce Committee voted 14-4 to send the bill to the full House.

Michigan is the only state in the nation that requires price tags on almost every item in stores.

The bill is intended to cut costs for stores. Retailers have said the current law requires too much time and costs too much money.

But some opponents of the bill said they are worried it would make it too difficult for some customers, particularly senior citizens, to figure out how much things cost.
