A 14-year-old boy died Sunday evening in the Kalamazoo River at Albion's Victory Park in what authorities call an "accidental drowning." Witnesses said he jumped off of a bridge and never resurfaced. His body was later recovered in ten feet of water by the Area Law Enforcement Underwater Recovery Team.
Lt. Creig Grey with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said bridge-diving can be dangerous and is also illegal. "The depth can be deceiving. It can appear to be deep, but there could be a shelf, and it suddenly becomes shallow."
The bridge where the teen jumped is marked, "No Jumping, No Diving, No swimming." It's the fourth drowning in 17 years at that location.
