Funding Cuts

The Detroit News reports that funding for universities, local governments and state departments are expected to see their state funding cut.

That's according to a preliminary list of $470 million in budget reductions. Gov. Engler is expected to propose the cuts next week in an executive order.

State revenue sharing for cities, counties and townships is expected to be reduced by five percent.

A one percent cut is likely for the higher education budget, which covers the state's 15 public universities.

Such a reduction may mean January tuition increases as universities try to offset the loss.

A two and a half percent spending cut is expected for other state departments covered by the nine billion dollar general fund.
