The Memorial Day parade and ceremony is held each year in Ovid, but this year is especially emotionally because the town has lost one of its own.
Crowds gathered to honor Staff Sergeant Ricky A. Kieffer and other fallen servicemen and women. Kieffer, 36 of Ovid, was killed in March by insurgents while fighting in Iraq.
A patriotic sign was displayed in honor of Kieffer and other lost soldiers. The sign is hung in military units, high schools and memorials all across the country and now, for the first time, it's in Michigan.
The "Fallen Friend" sign will be hung at the Ovid Village Municipal Building after the holiday.
