Michigan Takes Step Towards Tracking Sex Offenders by Internet

By  |

The state Senate has approved a bill allowing people to be notified by e-mail when a sex offender moves into their zip code.

The legislation would allow people to sign up for the free e-mail notification service.

The Senate voted 34-2 to send the bill to the House.

Supporters say the e-mail system would let people get important information without regularly having to the visit state's sex offender Web site or check with law enforcement.

But detractors say information in the sex offender registry can be misleading.

One woman suggested lawmakers narrow the list to ensure that people who are not dangerous are not included.
