Arrest in Deputy Fatal Shooting

Police in suburban Detroit say they have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of a Battle Creek police detective.

Dearborn police took the 21-year-old man into custody early Tuesday morning. They got a tip from a motorist who had spotted a black Ford Thunderbird with vanity plates matching a vehicle stolen after the shootings. Officers caught up to the suspect after a chase.

The slain officer has been identified as 44-year-old Lavern Brann, a 20-year veteran of the department. His partner was wounded in Monday’s shooting. They had gone to an apartment complex to interview two women about the fatal stabbing of taxi driver in April.

The suspect is the son of the women the detectives interviewed.
