The Speaker of the Michigan House wants to create a new hi-tech license plate to replace the 25-year-old blue and white plates now used by some six million motorists.
Rep. Craig DeRoche wants to replace them with a barcode plate that the police could scan to determine if a car is stolen and whether the driver has insurance.
Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land says this is the way of the future, but she has not endorsed the idea until the "true costs" are determined to implement the new plates.
