Possible State Cuts Impact Township

News 10 Capital Correspondent, Tim Skubick, reported Gov. John Engler would issue an executive order halting the distribution of $75 million to local cities and townships in Michigan.

Meridian Township officials say that 25 percent of their budget is dependent on state funds. Of that percentage it’s estimated three to 5 percent is in jeopardy.

The township’s manager, Jerry Richards, says he may have difficulty cutting the budget without affecting any personnel.

Specifically, he sighted critical services like police and firefighters who represent about 55 percent of the total budget.
