"Someone coming to my residence asking for personal information is disturbing," said Delta Township resident Anne Edwards.
It was Wednesday at about 6:30 pm. Edwards says two men approached her home insisting they needed to see her Consumers Energy bill. She says they didn't identify themselves and claimed to be investigating Consumers' prices.
"I think they're some fly-by-night corporation trying to get information from elderly people or people that are just vulnerable to scams," said Edwards.
Is it a scam? Or simply an alternative energy provider trying to get business?
"Michigan has a number of alternative gas suppliers and they are licensed by the Public Service Commission...You may get a door-to-door visit from a representative of one of these licensed alternative gas suppliers," said Judy Palnau from the Michigan Public Service Commission.
However, in this case, it's hard to tell what their true intentions are because they didn't identify themselves. Should you get a knock on your door, there are several things to watch out for.
"Normally, they would identify themselves and be wearing something indicating the company that they're with and they would not be misrepresenting themselves, so that's a clue right there," Palnau said.
The MPSC warns you should not provide a bill or any account information until you've done research and are ready to switch.
Palnau admits the scenario described by Edwards is suspicious.
"There have always been cases where people impersonate utilities or companies related to utilities in order to commit a crime."
Edwards didn't share her bill or any other information. She's also urging her neighbors to stay alert.
