YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) -- A Michigan university is apologizing after an email intended for 100 students with bad grades instead went to many more, telling them they had been kicked out of school.

Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti isn't sure how many people got the email Friday, but the group includes some recent graduates. President Susan Martin says she's sorry for the "undue alarm." Martin calls it an "inexcusable mistake."

The first sentence of the email reads: "As a result of your winter 2012 academic performance, you have been dismissed from Eastern Michigan University." It also mentions a way for students to appeal.

EMU has ruled out computer hacking as the reason for the widespread distribution of the email. Spokesman Walter Kraft says the email was sent by a private contractor.
