Possible Tax Hike?

Ex-House Speaker Paul Hilligonds told a house budget panel on Wednesday that Michigan is in danger of underfunding some of its most important services, including higher education. He said to avert that, "tax increases need to be on the table."

The proposal drew immediate fire from West Michigan Republican Rep. Glenn Steil, Jr., who called on the state's 15 universities to close down their golf courses and ground their private airplanes to avert any tax hikes.

The House Higher Ed budget subcommittee took testimony from four university presidents who called for more state support but stopped short of embracing a tax boost.
