The State of Michigan Unemployment Offices are doing their best to clean up a backlog of unemployment claims according to Kalmin Smith, Deputy Director of Michigan’s Consumer and Industry Services.
Smith says that legislation allowing employees at his offices to retire early has cut his qualified workforce by a third.
Also responsible for the bottleneck in service is a transfer towards a more efficient way to provide service.
Smith says many unemployment offices around the state are operating on ‘skeleton crews’ and without personnel qualified to answer complex unemployment questions.
He says by March of 2003, the new system will be in place and running smoothly, but he expects the current backlog to be cleaned up by Christmas.
