Western Michigan University's president is leaving Kalamazoo.
The University of Missouri announced Wednesday that Elson Floyd is accepting an offer for its presidency.
The 46-year-old Floyd will be the first black person to serve as president of Missouri's largest public university. He succeeds Manuel Pacheco, who is retiring at year's end.
Floyd starts his new duties Jan. 6.
Floyd became president of Michigan's fourth-largest university in 1998. His Missouri contract is for five years and no deferred compensation will be paid unless he completes that period in the presidency.
The University of Missouri system has about 60,000 students. Western Michigan has about 29,000 students.
