Bishop Mengeling, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lansing, says the grieving process for the Catholic church will be a heavy- hearted celebration.
"It's bittersweet. Mourning on the one hand, but also a day of triumph as he enters into glory," Mengeling says of John Paul the Second.
The church will be in mourning for nine days. The pope's funeral and burial will take place between the fourth and the sixth day of this period. Following that mourning, a chain of events to elect a new pope begins. That chain of events is mirrored closely with prayer services throughout the diocese.
