It's the beginning of a four-phase project. Phase 1, beginning Monday, is tearing down the M-50 bridge over 127.
They'll also add center turn lanes at M-50 and Hendee Road, and at M-50 and Rives Junction, and resurface M-50 between Hendee and Rives Junction Roads.
Despite the inconvenience, motorists say the changes are necessary safety moves.
"I've personally known two people in tragic accidents up there, so I think it’s long overdue," explains Scott Winthrow.
"By the high school up there especially, that's been a dangerous corner for a lot of years," says Marna Bazaner.
The changes means the M-50 and 127 interchange will be closed all summer long. One lane of 127 southbound will also be closed for a while, while the bridge part of the project is built. For M-50 drivers, detour routes are posted along the roads. For more information, check out www.michigan.gov/mdot. The "news and information" section has a link to an explanation of the project, and a map of detour routes as well.
