Gov. Jennifer Granholm has ordered U.S. flags across the state be lowered Tuesday in honor of a Michigan Army National Guard staff sergeant from Ovid who was killed in Iraq.
Ricky Kieffer, 36, died last Tuesday from injuries suffered in an attack by insurgents in Baghdad. He was assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 182nd Field Artillery Regiment based in Detroit.
Granholm on Friday issued the order for flags to be lowered.
Before being deployed, Kieffer worked as a mechanic for the Michigan National Guard in Lansing, which is about 30 miles southwest of Ovid.
Kieffer graduated from Ovid High School in 1986.
