Mt. Hope Elementary School has designated the week of March 7 as "Write to a Soldier Week" to encourage students to share some kind words with Army National Guard Specialist Kari Churchill and her unit, who are serving in Iraq.
Churchill's daughter Katelyn is a second-grader at the school.
"It seems to help [Katelyn] by knowing we're sending her mother packages, letters and fun stuff," said second-grade teacher Deborah Muth.
Mt. Hope has adopted specialist Churchill and the rest of the First Battalion of the 238th Aviation Regiment based in Grand Ledge.
The school has been sending care packages and communicating with Churchill since the unit's deployment.
