The Church of Greater Lansing Project: Food Drop 2012
The Church of Greater Lansing, a coalition of more than 45 Lansing area churches, announces Food Drop 2012, to be held on Saturday, February 25, 2012.
Those with a need for food need to call the Food Drop Hotline at 517-481-5551 to reserve a box of free food. The hotline is open from 8am to 7pm through Friday, January 20.
At Food Drop 2012, the fourth year for the Food Drop, these churches will unite to feed 10,000 people in our community. We expect more than 2,500 volunteers to come together to form 1,000 teams to deliver
boxes of food to the doors of more than 2,700 local families in need.
Last year we gave 31 lb. boxes of food, which fed a family for a week and an individual for a month.
This year we plan to again give enough food to feed a family for one week or an individual for 2 weeks. Special offerings were collected by the participating churches to purchase the food boxes.
Food Drop 2012 is in response to one of the area's most pressing needs. There are thousands of families, individuals and children in the greater Lansing area who go to sleep hungry every night. Many
area food banks have been unable to meet demands and people have to be turned away. The Lansing Food Banks report another increase in need, and requests for first time help have gone up for a fourth straight year.
Dave Karr, Director of the Mid-Michigan Food Bank, reacts this way: "Feeding 10,000 people in one day is unbelievable. The Food Drop is doing in one day what it takes the food bank a month to do. It's nothing short of a miracle."
