Okemos based Weyco, Inc. is making headlines across the country for its highly controversial no smoking policy. As of Jan. 1, the health benefits administrator has employees take mandatory smoking tests similar to a breathalyzer. If an employee refuses the test or fails he or she is fired.
Even though opponents say the policy is wrong, Howard Weyers, President of Weyco, Inc., is standing by it saying Michigan has no law against firing employees for smoking. The company implemented the policy roughly two years ago and now it's fully phased in. David Houston, Weyco, Inc.'s lawyer, says there's been no challenges so far.
Four employees quit the company prior to the New Year and Weyers says no one has been fired yet. Roughly 20 employees quit smoking to keep their jobs.
