MI Senators Mourn Death of Senate Colleague

Michigan Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin remember Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone for his passion and courage.

The Minnesota Democrat was killed Friday when the plane he was riding in crashed in northern Minnesota. He was on his way to the funeral of a friend. Wellstone's wife, daughter, three aides and the two pilots of the plane also died.

Senator Debbie Stabenow called Wellstone "a fighter for families." She remembered him for his help in the Medicare prescription drug effort and their effort to open U.S. borders to lower-cost prescription drugs in Canada.

Senator Carl Levin said Wellstone was a lawmaker who "combines passion for noble causes with personal kindness."

Senator Wellstone was locked in a tight reelection campaign with a Republican challenger.
