General Motors announced Monday it will close the Lansing Car Assembly Plant May 6. That's two weeks earlier than the estimated closure date of May 20 announced last week.
GM officials also estimated Monday 3,700 workers could be affected. The original number was 3,500.
According to GM Spokesperson Kim Carpenter, "In our original estimate, we had to act quickly on the numbers. We've since had time to do a more in-depth calculation, and that's why the number was increased."
Lay-offs will begin May 9.
The Delta Township Assembly Plant will be opening late 2006 and will employ an estimated 2,900 workers, ikely many from the Lansing plant that's closing.
