The 4835 building caught fire just off a central stairway around 12:30. It spread quickly, thanks to high winds on Sunday afternoon.
There are 24 units in the complex. Meridian Twp. Fire Chief Randy Karnes says the building is likely destroyed.
Twenty-five firefighters from Meridian Township and East Lansing fire responded.
One resident was taken to the hospital. The extent of his injuries is not known at this time.
Red Cross was on scene within hours to provide "emergency needs," i.e. food, shelter, clothing, and medication.
The mid-Michigan chapter of the American Red Cross says this is the third major apartment fire in just 26 days. They admit resources are strained, but say they'll keep providing what is needed.
