Michigan's jobless rate improved to 7.1 percent in January.

That's better than the revised 7.5 percent unemployment rate posted in December. But it's still much higher than the national average.

The national rate was 5.2 percent in January.

Michigan's jobless rate has hovered around the seven percent mark since early 2003.

The state continues to lose manufacturing jobs but has made up the losses in other areas.
