Tuesday's announcement that the Lansing Car Assembly plant would close around May 20 surprises many.
"I was shocked and surprised because I didn't think it would close until the end of the year," said Lansing Mayor Tony Benavides.
Benavides said not only is he concerned about the plant employees; he's also worried about the businesses and neighborhoods that surround the area.
"What's going to happen to the businesses?"
The mayor is scheduled to meet with GM executives within the next two weeks to discuss possible uses for the land and plant.
