"It's really important for people to check their credit reports and look at them very carefully to see if there are errors and get those taken care of so that it accurately represents your credit history," said Kate Madigan with the Public Interest Research Group in Michigan (PIRGIM).

She said many people don't realize that there may be significant inaccuracies on their credit reports.

"Our research has found that one in four credit reports have serious errors on them," Madigan said.

These errors can be costly in terms of your financial future.
