Steven James Gilbert is a family acquaintance, he was arraigned on one count of open murder Thursday afternoon in a Clinton Co. Courthouse.
Lansing police detectives say they had been questioning Gilbert since Samantha went missing on Saturday. After hours of questioning Thursday morning, he finally told police where they could find her body.
"The investigation has gone from a missing person case to a homicide investigation," said Noel Garcia, a Lansing detective who has been following the case. "We were fortunate that [Gilbert] cooperated with us." Garcia said.
Gilbert broke down when the judge asked him if he understood the charges against him.
News Ten has learned Gilbert has a criminal record. According to the department of correction Web site, he spent eight years in prison for assault with intent to do great bodily harm. He's scheduled to be in court again March 10.
Sheila Detzler, Samatha's mother, did not hold back when describing how she feels about the person who killed her daughter.
"I hate this person for what they did to my daughter and what they did to my family," she said.
