The Republican leader of the Michigan House is lashing out at the Democratic governor's proposal to eliminate $500 scholarships promised to high school students.

Speaker Craig DeRoche of Novi called Governor Granholm's proposal a raw deal for college-bound students who had been counting on the scholarship money.

The Democratic governor's budget plan for the upcoming fiscal year proposes not awarding the $500 Michigan Merit Award scholarships to save money.

Nearly 50,000 high school seniors earned the awards by passing all four Michigan Educational Assessment Program tests in seventh and eighth grades.

A spokesman for the state Department of Treasury said the cuts were difficult to make, but the state has to balance the budget.
