Many retailers found Black Friday shopping on the day after Thanksgiving did not bring in the money they hoped for, but the Saturday before Christmas is the biggest shopping day of the year, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. Their stats put pre-Christmas Saturday at the top of the list for 8 years running.
MSU economics professor Charles Ballard calls it a trend. He also notes that Black Friday shoppers buy bargains at mid to low-level retailers. Shoppers buying gifts last minute often spend with less restraint.
That's good news for retailers. The National Retail Federation says 37.5 million shoppers hadn't even started as of a survey they conducted December 1st through 8th. The hope is new trends in consumer behavior may bring retailers' totals up to par.
